After major Adelaide storm events (November 2016 state-wide blackout, January 2024 hail), the difference between a smooth insurance claim and a stressful one comes down to documentation and quote management. This guide walks through the Adelaide-specific steps.
Step 1: Document the damage
Within 24-48 hours of the storm:
- Photos from ground - every side of the house
- Photos inside - any leaks, water stains, ceiling damage
- Date and time on every photo (your phone does this automatically)
- Note any items damaged (furniture, ceiling fans, etc.)
Do not climb on the roof yourself - get a licensed roofer to do that.
Step 2: File the claim
Most insurers want notification within 24-72 hours of the event. Use the online portal or claims line. Provide the photos and a brief description.
Step 3: Get the inspection
Some insurers send their own assessor; others ask you to get a written report from a licensed roofer. An independent inspection (one not tied to a restoration quote) is best - it carries more weight with the assessor.
Step 4: Get the quotes
Your insurer will tell you how many quotes to provide - usually 1 to 3 written quotes from licensed roofers. Insurance-claim format quotes need to be itemised so the assessor can match line items to the policy.
Our network provides insurance-format quotes when you mention storm damage in your enquiry. Mention it in the project details and we'll route to assessors-experienced contractors.
Step 5: Wait for approval
Don't pay for permanent repairs until the claim is approved. Temporary tarping or emergency repairs are usually covered separately and don't require pre-approval.
Step 6: Execute repairs
Some insurers pay you and you pay the contractor. Some pay the contractor directly. Some have preferred-supplier networks. Read your policy.
What insurance typically covers
- Storm and hail damage - dislodged tiles, dented Colorbond, lifted flashing, water ingress
- Fallen-tree damage - branch through the roof
- Lightning damage - rare but covered
- Resulting water damage - usually covered if traced to the storm
What insurance typically does NOT cover
- Gradual deterioration (aged tiles, failed pointing)
- Wear-and-tear leaks
- Lack of maintenance damage
- Pre-existing conditions
The post-storm scam wave
After every major Adelaide storm, door-knockers descend on affected suburbs claiming “free inspections”. They're looking for inflated claim opportunities and homeowners who'll pay deposit before assessment. Avoid. Use a roofer you found through referral or a vetted network.
